Wednesday, December 11, 2019. New York City – The painting by Fabián Cháirez depicts a feminine naked Zapata in high heels and a pink sombrero. His willowy frame is bound by a ribbon striped with the Mexican colors of red, white and green. He is sitting on a white horse. The horse is in full erection. The painting “La Revolución” is part of the exhibition titled “Zapata after Zapata” at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City.
On Tuesday, homophobes stormed Palacio de Bellas Artes to demand the removal of the painting. Some homophobes want to burn the painting. They attacked members of the LGBTQ+ community.
Due to the recent violent events, there will be a rally in support of Fabian Cháirez, freedom of expression and rights of the LGBTTTI community. Friday, December 13. 4 P.M. Esplanade of the Palacio de Bellas Artes.
Jorge Zapata González, a grandson of Emiliano Zapata Salazar said in a press conference that he has gay friends but he is against the painting depicting Emiliano Zapata as gay.
Homophobia is a serious problem in Mexico. According to the organization Letra S, from 2013 to 2018 a total of 473 people from the LGBTTTI community were murdered. In 2019, 28 people from this group have been killed.
Today, mexican president Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO as many people know him) said in his daily press conference that he condemns attacks on members of the LGBTTTI community and that there should be no hate crimes. He has not seen the painting, but he will go to see it, he said in the press conference.
Emiliano Zapata Salazar (8 August 1879 – 10 April 1919) was a leading figure in the Mexican Revolution, the main leader of the peasant revolution in the state of Morelos, and the inspiration of the agrarian movement called Zapatismo. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador declared this year 2019 – the centennial of Emiliano’s death – as the “year of Zapata.”
Luis Vargas Santiago, the curator of the current exhibition at the Palacio de Bellas Artes said, “Who does Zapata belong to? Does he belong to his family members? Does he belong to the government? Or does he belong to everyone? Our response is: he belongs to everyone who identifies with his legacy.” According to Vargas Santiago some of Zapata’s descendants had expressed support for the exhibition.

This is not a new painting. The painting is from 2013. On November 20, 2017, Fabián Cháirez said on Instagram, “¡VIVA LA REVOLUCIÓN! The 20th of November Mexico celebrates the day of the national revolution. I made this painting inspired in EMILIANO ZAPATA who fought for liberty and justice in Mexico.”
The painting “La Revolución” by painter Fabián Cháirez is part of the exhibition entitled “Zapata después de Zapata”. The exhibition is at the Museo del Palacio de Bellas Artes. The exhibition is from November 27, 2019 to February 16, 2020.
